Student Speakers Contest

GOAL:  To encourage youth involvement, develop self-esteem, and build confidence in public speaking.

ENTRANTS:  The contest is open to students, including foreign exchange students, grades 9 thru 12 of and Vista school, charter school, private school, or home school.  Contestants must not have completed grade 12 prior to the termination of the spring semester of the year and must be attending school when the competition is held.  Previous MD4 Finals winners are not eligible.  First 6 applicants are eligible, later entries will be placed on the waiting list.

TOPIC:   "What Could the America of Yesterday Teach the America of Tomorrow?"

TIME LIMITATIONS:  Students entering the contest shall prepare a talk to be as close as possible to, but not over ten (10) minutes, nor less than five (5) minutes delivery time.

JUDGING CRITERIA:  Text (thought content) - 40 points, Delivery - 30 points, Effectiveness of the effort as a whole - 30 points.  At club level, notes may be used.  Above the club level, notes are restricted to one (1) 3"x5" card.  Presentation shall be given in the English Language only.

AWARDS: 

Club Level (this contest) $50.00 to winner,  $25.00 to each participant
Zone Contest $75.00 to one winner only
Region Contest $125.00 to one winner only
District Contests $4,500.00 Scholarship to 15 winners
Area Contest $6,500.00 Scholarship to 4 winners
MD4 Final Contest $10,000.00 Scholarship to one winner
Maximum Possible Scholarship Award $21,250.00 to one winner only

 

The Pride of Vista Lions Club Student Speakers Contest will be held  February 2, 2012

Participating students may invite their parents and coaches to attend.  After the meeting is called to order, the contest rules will be read aloud, and the speakers will be called by number (there will be no introductions until after all speeches are delivered).  Following the speeches, introductions will be made and dinner will be served.  Students will then be free to mingle with other guests and ask judges for feedback if desired.
